Better

Novel is a strategy and change specialist. We partner with market leaders and challengers to build winning business concepts and help to make them real.

In short: We build better businesses.

What we do

Bringing clarity and getting it done

Novel supports its clients on four areas: Strategy design, Organization and Operating model design, Commercial Excellence development and Execution and Change management.

Regardless of the topic, our approach is characterized by a combination of “hard” and “soft”. While being analytical and fact-based, we always engage the client organizations and work side-by-side with their people. For our clients, our approach brings clarity, builds commitment and boosts capability to implement.

"Novel has been a valuable partner to challenge our thinking and to quickly clarify the way forward also when the starting point has been less clear."

Strategy Design

Successful strategies are clear, focused, engaging and actionable.

Strategy Design

Successful strategies are clear, focused, engaging and actionable

Strategy design is Novel’s core offering. Over the years we have helped tens of companies – from large corporations to dynamic start-ups – design winning strategies. In a typical strategy assignment our clients embark on an intensive process engaging a large number of people and involving both both analytical work and facilitated team interactions. We steer, challenge and support our clients throughout the process and ensure that the choices are documented in a concise, easy-to-communicate manner.

The engaging process helps build commitment and capability to implement.

Organization and Operating Model Design

The organization and operating model are the key enablers – or inhibitors – of business success.

Organization and Operating Model Design

The organization and operating model are the key enablers – or inhibitors – of business success.

In addition to designing a winning strategy, getting the organization to execute it is one of the challenges the management face. Novel has wide experience in supporting companies of different sizes in organization and operating model development. We help our clients identify the root causes for poor organizational performance, redesign organization models and processes, reshape management and steering models, and carry out major restructuring programmes.

We believe that organization and operating models are not only about processes and systems, but especially about people. That is why in addition to the “hard” topics, we always pay special attention to the “soft” aspects – how to get employees to commit to the planned changes.

Commercial Excellence Development

True customer-centricity increases your chances of success.

Commercial Excellence Development

True customer-centricity increases your chances of success.

Novel has worked on commercial excellence development – designing commercial practices that improve customer experience and deliver profitable growth – in a range of industries. We help our clients boost profitable growth by understanding the market and customer needs, and segmenting and prioritising customers. We support them in packaging offerings, crystallizing value propositions, and shaping sales and delivery models in order to meet the customer expectations while optimizing the cost to serve.

As customer-centricity often requires new attitudes and capabilities, we also support our clients through tailored training and coaching.

Execution and Change Management

Change does not happen by itself – it needs to be managed.

Execution and Change Management

Change does not happen by itself – it needs to be managed.

Novel helps its clients not only in designing the winning business concepts but also in making them real. We have a strong track record in managing and supporting large, corporate-wide execution and transformation programmes and shortening the time from plans to results. In practice, we help understand the need for and potential barriers to change. We design transformation and execution programmes, governance practices and progress tracking methods. We also roll up our sleeves and participate in execution – by running a programme management office (PMO), facilitating progress tracking and participating in implementation activities.

We also increase the organizations’ implementation capabilities through tailored training and coaching programmes.

Examples of our work

We work with market leaders and challengers independent of size and sector. While being generalists in our approach, we have gained extensive experience in helping especially large international corporations and medium-sized B2B companies in ICT, professional services, industrial manufacturing and services, process industries, and construction.

I have worked with Novel in several strategy-related assignments. I appreciate their expertise and result-oriented approach.

Kick-starting a centralized support function of an ICT firm

We helped a global ICT corporation rapidly reorganize and launch a new centralized organizational unit serving over 10 000 employees globally.

A global ICT corporation had recently launched a new strategy and invited Novel to help reorganise one of its major support functions. The function was previously decentralised into business units in several countries and its operations were unharmonised, resulting in low customer satisfaction. Novel designed and managed an intensive kick-start project to rebuild the function. The new unit head and a small core team designed an organization and governance model and appointed key people. They were then engaged in building a shared strategy for the function, setting targets and creating an action plan. After three months of intensive work the new unit successfully launched its operations. According to the client, Novel’s involvement in the project increased speed and discipline, ensured focus on the key priorities and build stakeholder commitment through the engaging way of working.

We carried out a study to understand market potential in eight European countries and helped the management to identify the most attractive options for international expansion

An eHealth start-up company had ambitious growth aspirations and was preparing for the next investment round. International expansion was part of their future vision, but in order to create a concrete growth plan they first needed solid understanding of potential markets. Novel carried out a study of eight short-listed European markets and together with the management identified the most potential solution area and market combinations to pursue. Three months after the work was finished the company was already taking the first steps to build business in the selected countries.

Creating a customer engagement model for an industrial corporation

We helped an international industrial goods and services provider develop and roll out a harmonized customer segmentation and engagement model.

An international industrial corporation had faced a period of flat growth and wanted to develop customer relationship management in order to turn the trend. To do this efficiently, they first wanted to segment the customers and focus the efforts on the most promising accounts. With the help of Novel, the company created a common model for segmenting the customers based on their current value and expected future value for the company. The model was then rolled out into country units responsible for the customer operations. As a result of the project, eight key countries had segmented their customers, named key accounts and started key account management actions, as well as defined action plans for developing customer relationship management in other customer segments.

Building “one company” culture through management training

We supported an international construction company in building a “one company” culture by facilitating a multi-year management training programme for nearly 200 participants.

A construction company had set the goal of becoming “one company” with harmonized ways of working and increased internal co-operation and synergies. In order to build a foundation for that, a training programme for top and middle management was launched with four one-day modules: Strategy, strategy execution, customer relationship management and leadership. Novel was first asked to facilitate one of the modules, but after a while took the responsibility for planning, coordination and facilitation of the entire programme. During three years in total 12 groups and nearly 200 participants went through the programme. It consistently received praising feedback and was seen by the top management as an integral tool for building “one company” culture.

Designing a customer-centric business model

We supported the transformation of a global industrial goods and services provider from product to solution business by designing a customer-centric business model.

A global industrial corporation had reorganised one of its divisions into customer segment-based business units. One of the units invited Novel to help align its business model with the new set-up. Novel mobilized a large number of client experts to design and implement a new customer-centric business model. During the project, customer segmentation was fine-tuned, customer needs analysed and value propositions for different segments defined. It also included the definition of product-service offerings and operating models required for delivering the customer benefits.

In addition to the tangible results, the project resulted in a shared understanding of the customer needs, priorities and approach to deliver customer value. The management felt that the project had a major role in helping to turn the unit from product business to customer-oriented solutions business.

In order to ensure efficient product management and optimized product portfolio amid increasing complexity, the company wanted to improve its practices for creating and launching new products. With the help of Novel, the company engaged in a project  where the key people from different functions defined a harmonized new product process with related decision points, tasks and roles. As a result, the company had a documented process for managing new products and key functions committed to the new practices.

Supporting the transformation of a global ICT corporation

We helped a global ICT corporation to reposition itself through a comprehensive business transformation programme.

Once a stellar performer in its industry, an ICT corporation had failed to address the market changes and had become an underperformer. The new corporate strategy outlined that in order to improve business performance, fundamental changes were needed to its siloed and hierarchical operating model. Novel supported the management in designing a comprehensive transformation programme and then took responsibility for managing one of the key initiatives, a company reorganization. The work included designing a new matrix organization structure, planning reporting and steering practices, creating a new job architecture and managing the transition from old to new structure. As a result of the reorganization, the company became more integrated with larger units, fewer organizational layers, and harmonized ways of working. The reorganization together with other major changes helped the corporation to reposition itself and get back on the track of profitable growth.

Novel designed and facilitated a process where over 80 people contributed to the strategy creation in seven work streams. The process resulted in a wide understanding of and commitment to company strategic objectives and strategic cornerstones as well as concrete plans for the chosen growth areas. Since the finalization of the process the company has delivered significant growth and implemented improvements in its selected focus areas.

Restructuring a global industrial manufacturer

We helped a global manufacturer of intermediate goods increase transparency and achieve global scale through a new organizational structure and steering model

A global manufacturer of intermediate goods had gone through a major cost-cutting program and was now prepared to take the next step. The management felt that in order to be able to steer the company into a new direction, it needed increased transparency and control over the business areas that had earlier operated fairly independently. Facilitated by Novel, the company went through a restructuring process during which its business structure was redefined and a new operating and steering model, including organizational structure, was created. As a result from the restructuring and strategy definition for the redefined business areas, the company was soon back on the growth track and saw significant increase in the share value during the following years.

Crystallizing a growth plan of a construction company

We helped a PE-owned construction company go through an intensive strategy discussion to crystallize its growth plan and business priorities.

A construction company was formed a few years back as a result of a merger. During the post-merger integration period a new strategy had been created with external support, but it had not been taken fully into action. A new CEO was appointed and he wanted to crystallize an actionable plan for the coming years. With the help of Novel, the company created a concise strategy that defined the target state, business scope and growth areas and crystallized what was required to make the growth real. As a result of the work, the company had a clear growth plan and priorities and has since made good progress on its track towards reaching the ambitious growth targets.

Accelerating strategy execution through programme management

We helped an industrial manufacturer adopt a systematic, effective way to manage global strategy execution.

Following a successful corporate strategy process, an industrial corporation asked Novel for help in strategy execution. Together with the management, Novel designed a strategy execution model for the corporation. It designed the execution planning architecture and process, created planning tools, supported business units and functions in the creation of execution plans and designed the execution governance model. Novel then assumed the role of a virtual “Project Management Office” to support the client in execution activities and in tracking the progress. As a result of the work, the corporation now has a shared, systematic and effective way to manage execution across its business units and geographies and the management feels that the company has significantly improved its capability to implement.

We helped an international engineering and consulting company boost its sales and profitability by packaging service offerings

An international engineering and consulting company asked Novel for help in designing its service offerings. The company had traditionally sold expertise by the hour, but saw an opportunity to boost sales and improve efficiency by packaging its services. Novel facilitated a design process for the company’s main service offerings. Engaging the clients’ experts in the work, the process started with the identification of target customers and their needs. After that, value propositions and service descriptions were formulated and service delivery models defined. Finally, compelling marketing and sales messages were crystallized for each offering. In addition to the tangible results, the process enabled the client to significantly improve its capability in packaging services. The company has since continued packaging its offerings and today they account for over a half of the company’s total revenue.

About us

Building better businesses

Since its foundation in 2000, Novel has delivered hundreds of assignments in order to build winning business concepts and make them real.

Founded by Timo Hentunen, Novel grew out of frustration – and an opportunity. After several years as a consultant and as a business executive, Timo was unhappy with traditional consulting approaches. They were often characterized by brilliant thinking and great plans, but little focus on implementation. More often than not, the clients failed to deliver results due to lack of understanding of or commitment to the plans, or lack of capability to execute them. Novel was built with a mission to change this and truly help its clients. We started to work side-by-side with our clients, not for them. We built a concept that combines analytical rigour and an engaging, facilitative approach that builds commitment and boosts capability to implement. That is how we deliver sustainable results.

"Novel helped us to prepare for our international expansion by carrying out a market study of selected European countries."
